What is the price of a laser coding machine in India?
Investment depends on laser type (CO2, fiber or UV), lens/marking field, line integration and safety setup. Markem-Imaje provides a basic budgetary quote within one business day, and an any-brand trade-in on your existing coder can offset the investment. Over 5 years, a laser typically costs about half as much as a continuous inkjet printer because it uses no ink or consumables.
Is laser coding cheaper than inkjet (CIJ) coding?
Over the lifetime, yes in most applications. A laser coder has higher upfront cost but zero consumables — no ink, makeup fluid, filters or cartridges. Markem-Imaje's FMCG cost model (3.84 million prints/year) shows roughly ₹-equivalent savings of €35,900 per year, payback in about 2 years, and half the 5-year total cost versus CIJ, while eliminating around 77 hours/year of unplanned coder stoppages.
Can a laser print batch number, MFG date, expiry and MRP as required in India?
Yes. Laser coders mark all Legal Metrology and FSSAI-mandated information — batch number, manufacturing date, expiry/best-before and MRP — permanently at full line speed. The marks cannot smudge, fade or be wiped off, which also protects against date-code tampering in the trade.
Which laser is right for my packaging material?
Rule of thumb: CO2 lasers (SmartLase C-series) for cartons, labels, paper, glass and PET; fiber lasers (e-Solarmark eFLS 35W) for bare metal, aluminium, cables, pipes and HDPE; UV lasers (e-Solarmark eDLV 3W) for recycled PET, multilayer films, Tetra Pak and PP caps where other lasers lack contrast. Markem-Imaje marks free samples on your actual substrate before you decide.
What is GS1 Sunrise 2027 and why does it matter?
GS1 Sunrise 2027 is the global initiative for retail point-of-sale systems worldwide to scan 2D barcodes (QR / Data Matrix) by the end of 2027. One GS1 Digital Link QR carries GTIN, batch, expiry and serial number — enabling traceability, faster recalls, anti-counterfeit and consumer engagement. Exporters and modern-trade suppliers in India need gradeable 2D codes on-pack; lasers print them permanently, and CoLOS software builds them natively.
Does India have a QR code mandate for pharmaceuticals?
Yes. Since August 2023, India mandates GS1-based QR/barcodes on the top 300 drug formulations, with coverage expanding. Exported pharma must also meet destination-market serialization rules (US DSCSA, EU FMD). Laser-marked Data Matrix and QR codes with CoLOS serialization meet these requirements with permanent, gradeable marks.
Will a laser coder work in a 45°C Indian plant?
